The original “dust bunny” was discovered by Klaus Heidegger. Despite its name, the species is much closer to an opossum than a rabbit. The name, of course, is derived from the places where these marsupials are usually found: in hiding places under furniture, under porches, or any place they can create a home. They have strong claws that can go through most building materials, but work rather silently and often go unnoticed for long periods of time. They are quite a mystery as not much is known about their diet or their reproduction. This invasive animal that sneaks into homes has been known for repurposing found or stolen objects. Before the first of these creatures was discovered in the home of Dr. Heidegger, he noticed that several of his things were missing from his medical bag. His daughter claimed to have found a similar medical bag, only several sizes smaller, in the shed – but that could not be confirmed. The original specimen, found under Dr. Heidegger’s bed, made a small home underneath the floorboards. Apparently, it was busy unraveling box springs. They could not determine if it was making tools or musical instruments.
