Travis Louie, The Giant Bat of Exmoor, acrylic on board,  20 x 16"

In 1873 there were reports of a gigantic bat flying in North Devon. Oscar Pennington was dispatched to investigate the sightings which were almost all at night.

Accompanying him on his journey was sculptor Thomas Woolner who also has a fascination with the unknown after a few weeks of camping out in the forest. They were able to capture (and release) a large Barbastelle Bat. They are a common bat in England but a specimen of this size had never been found before or since.
