Travis Louie, Ferguson, the Professional Mourner, acrylic on board, 14 x 11" Sold

In certain Victorian towns, it was not unusual for funeral directors to hire professional mourners. Ferguson was a legendary character in the mourners business. He often went about his paces with an accompaniment of a dozen or so funeral marches. It was quite an event as he led a rather theatrical procession of sad wailers or howlers who waved banners and flags. For wealthier patrons, he led a five piece brass band while he banged a drum.
