The first impression one gets from a pastel by Nicora Gangi is of technical
excellence. The startling level of realism combined with the ingenious compositions instantly
inform us that we are viewing the work of an incredibly accomplished artist.
But for Nicora Gangi, the objects, colors and compositions are metaphors. The
images she creates come from her daily reading of the Bible, the arrangement of
objects refer to the organization or lack of in our daily lives and the colors
have specific symbolic signifigance.
It takes Nicora Gangi as long to physically create the still life
arrangement as it does to make a pastel of it. Beginning with a
pencil drawing, then relying on her printmaking background she builds
up layers of color Gangi moves toward a completed pastel. She
blends the pastel with her fingers, rarely uses fixative on her work
and erases with a stiff brush.
Nicora Gangi received her BFA and MFA from Syracuse University. She has had
numerous solo exhibitions nationwide and is in many important public and private
collections. Recently Nicora Gangi was featured in American Artist
Magazine. |
