Nanette Vonnegut paints real things in somewhat unreal situations so in that way she could cautiously be described as a surrealist. Vonnegut uses an amazingly wide variety of mediums and techniques when creating her art, from printmaking, fabric sculpture, painted and glazed porcelain, drawing, sewing and enamel on glass tiles. She uses completely recognizable people and circumstances but juxtaposes them so that they are seen in a different way. The stories she tells are open ended and we are left to create our own conclusions. Vonnegut combines the sacred with the profane, the famous with the notorious and the revered with the reviled. What we see in her work might not always be the most logical things to be seen together, but in Nanny Vonnegut's world they are just perfect.
